The second season of WAKING The GIANTS is concerned with waste management systems and sustainable solutions. Through a sociological lens, artists Aya Tarek and Simon Petermann are interested in highlighting the biblical concept of greed and its implications on society, economics, and climate change. Specifically, connections between climate change, fast-fashion waste, capitalism, and greed will be drawn in the project, in ways to pose artistic commentary as well as provide potential solutions. Questions on the role of greed will be raised, whether it could act as both the ambitious force towards salvation and possess a causational relationship with climate change simultaneously.

Some case-studies will be used in their research phase, such as “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”–which is known to be larger than the entirety of Switzerland–and the fast fashion clothes pile in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The artists are intrigued by the cause(s) of such crises and aim to address their short and long-term repercussions on neighboring communities as well as global climate change, namely unrecyclable organizational waste, mass production, child labor, exploitation, and social injustice as a wider concept.

Looking into sustainable solutions will be in the center point of their research phase, where the artists will be working with scientists who work on biodegradable materials, sustainable energy and clean fuel. They plan to use this project not only to criticize the current global status quo, but mainly to highlight the need for change and to provide a buoyant perspective on climate solutions. Encouraging the general public to look for sustainable products and living methods is at the forefront goals of the project.
